鉢盂裏走馬 異文化交流

先日、生徒さんがカナダのご友人を教室に連れてきてくださったので抹茶体験レッスンを行いました。

講師による薄茶点前デモンストレーションによる呈茶の後、お好きなお茶碗でご自身でも茶筅を振って薄茶を点てていただきました。

お茶とお菓子を楽しみながらお軸の説明を。 この日のお軸は「鉢盂裏走馬(はつうりにうまをはしらす)」

鉢盂(はつう)とはお坊さんの食器、茶碗のことで、小さな茶碗の中に大きな馬が入って走り回るなどというのはありえないことですが、禅の悟りは物の大小のような相対的観念を超越している、という禅語です。

この言葉をお茶の楽しみ方の一例としてご紹介致しました。

数年前お茶を知らない方にもブームとなった曜変天目が「茶碗の中に宇宙が見える」と言われたように、ご自身で選んだお茶碗の絵や茶室の花を見て、それをただの器、室内に飾られた花と見るのではなく、想像力を働かせ、「紫陽花畑の中で」「青楓が風でそよぐ音や川のせせらぎを聞きながら」お茶を楽しむことで、己の世界がまた一つ拡がることも茶の湯に触れる醍醐味だと思います。

この話を大変気に入ってくださったお客様方が是非他の友人にも伝えたいと英訳してくださいましたので、紹介させていただきます。

Take a moment to picture this.

When you painted that picture in your mind you took an important step in learning the art of the tea ceremony — you used your imagination! A horse, being as large as it is, cannot fit inside of a pot. Still, using your imagination this impossible event managed to occur within the realm of your mind.

This scroll is displayed with the intention of encouraging guests to enjoy the tea while using their imagination. By teleporting yourself into the world depicted on each tea bowl (chawan) you can begin to truly enjoy the depth and intricacy of the tea ceremony.

The Japanese tea ceremony is not as simple as drinking tea. It’s a truly immersive experience and has so much depth — we’ve barely scratched the surface here and there’s always more to learn!
